Less is More

An exhibition of watercolour paintings by Judith Beeby inspired by the power of simplicity.

“I offer an interpretation of nature using the luminosity and beauty of watercolour which allows the viewer to get lost in an image as if in a dream. By immersing myself in the painting process I often see a picture appear almost as if by magic. What starts as a figurative sketch becomes a loose abstract image. Landscape painters who are faced with the challenge of expressing intricate environments often try to take the simplest option. This can mean avoiding too much detail and concentrating on the use of colour and contrast. Abstraction gives the viewers permission to make their own interpretation of the energy and complexity of nature. I aim not just to present an observed scene but to show, through the movement of water and paint on paper, and the use of colour, the image I have in my mind.”

Judith Beeby is a contemporary artist living in Lea and working in a studio at Stockham Marsh Farm in Foxham. She completed a BA hons in creative art in 2014 and a Masters in Fine Art in 2016 , both at Bath Spa University. Since qualifying she has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Judith has a large body of work which includes large abstract paintings in gloss paint and gold leaf maps as well as watercolours.

“For many years I have been moved by the colour blue at the far edge of what can be seen, that colour of horizons, of remote mountain ranges, of anything far away. The colour of that distance is the colour of an emotion, the colour of solitude and of desire, the colour of there seen from here, the colour of where you are not. And the colour of where you can never go.”
